In the realm of charity cycling events, few can boast the longevity and impact of the Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer, now in its 16th year. With a goal to surpass the monumental milestone of $100 million raised for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since its inception, this event stands as a true source of inspiration and impact for those facing cancer across the province. At the heart of this success are long-standing partnerships with corporate teams and sponsors, like RBC.
Led by Tyson MacDonald, Co-Captain and Executive Champion on the Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer Community Leadership Committee, Team RBC has become synonymous with both camaraderie and fundraising success at the Tour.
“Everyone seems to have a friend, colleague, or loved one who has been touched by cancer, providing a strong reason to join and support this Tour, year after year.”
For Tyson, the cause hits especially close to home this year. “I lost my friend Glen to pancreatic cancer in March,” he shares. “This loss is a stark reminder of how critical this Tour is in funding the research necessary to beat this disease.”
For over a decade, Team RBC has proudly remained a lead sponsor and corporate team of the Tour, surpassing $1 million in funds raised for cancer research through the Alberta Cancer Foundation. This remarkable accomplishment speaks volumes about RBC’s commitment to powering ideas and programs that help people in their communities thrive.
For Tyson and his teammates, the journey is about more than just dollars raised and kilometers pedalled. “Being part of a team has made the experience even more rewarding,” he reflects. “Seeing the absolute joy on the faces of riders as they cross the finish line and recognizing that your physical accomplishment is serving a greater purpose, is incredibly fulfilling.”
With the 2024 Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer on the horizon this July, Team RBC is gearing up for another incredible weekend. “Stop thinking about it and just do it!” Tyson urges those considering joining the Tour. “The Tour offers tremendous support for both the fundraising and cycling aspect, and as my colleague who convinced me to join almost 10 years ago was fond of saying, “It’s all doable.”
As he pedals towards the team’s fundraising target, Tyson is keeping his eyes on the bigger picture. “As a committee member, I recently had the privilege of touring the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre and was astonished at its size and the integration of research and patient care.” Tyson explains.
“I am so proud to be part of this event and see first-hand the profound impact that funds raised through the Tour have had on the lives of Albertans.”
